Eligibility

Are You Eligible to Apply for Irish Citizenship?

Eligibility is normally restricted to those with a parent or grandparent who was born on the island of Ireland, with some exceptions.

Irish Born Parent or Grandparent

If your parent or grandparent was born on the Island of Ireland, you are eligible to apply.

Irish Born Great-Grandparent

If your parent (born abroad) registered with the Irish government before your birth, or if the circumstances of your birth meet certain conditions, you may be eligible to apply.

Naturalization based on Irish Associations

Even if you don’t fully meet the standard statutory conditions for a typical naturalization application, you may be able to apply for an exemption by demonstrating Irish associations. Please note that approval of these applications is granted at the discretion of the Minister for Justice who processes them.

Further Removed Irish Ancestor

In nearly all cases, an Irish ancestor more than three generations removed would not qualify, due to historical conditions.

What happens during the consultation?

We review your family lineage, assess whether you likely qualify under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, identify what documentation will be needed, and what to expect of the application process. You leave with a clear understanding of your case and next steps — with no obligation to proceed.

Most applicants do not. Proof of Irish citizenship is an administrative process, not an immigration matter. Lawyer involvement is recommended only for cases with historical anomalies or documentary gaps.

No. Under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, no deadline exists by which you need to file your application.

The most straightforward eligibility to apply for Irish citizenship is open to children and grandchildren of an Irish-born ancestor. In some circumstances, you may be eligible through your great-grandparent if more complex eligibility criteria are met.

Yes. Family members can submit together and share one set of generational documents. Each person needs their own application form, photos, identity documents, and will be subject to the Irish application processing fee. We’ll discuss group logistics during your consultation.

No, this is not a traditional citizenship application. It is a citizenship by descent process, meaning you are applying for proof of citizenship you already have through your ancestry. Because of this, there is no deadline to apply.
