The Basics

Why Luxembourg dual citizenship

What are the advantages of Luxembourg dual citizenship?

For many of our clients, citizenship provides a sense of belonging and connection to their family roots and history. Once you obtain citizenship, you can get a Luxembourg passport, which ranks among the world’s strongest, providing full freedom to live, work, study, or retire across all 27 European Union member states.

Will I lose my US citizenship by becoming a Luxembourg citizen?

No. The United States permits dual citizenship under current law, and Luxembourg allows dual citizenship as well. You keep your US citizenship when you become a Luxembourg citizen.

Will I owe taxes to Luxembourg as a dual citizen?

No, Luxembourg does not tax foreign-sourced income of non-residents. You would owe taxes only if you maintain legal residence or generate specific income within the country.

Can my future children inherit my dual citizenship?

Yes, once your citizenship is formally recognized, it establishes a legal lineage that can be passed down to future generations.

Eligibility

Ancestry & documents

How many generations back can I trace my Luxembourgish lineage for a qualifying ancestor?

This depends on your specific family history and citizenship pathway. Some applicants qualify through a great-grandparent, others further back. The qualifying ancestor must have been born after 1815 within the modern-day borders of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

I think I have an ancestor who emigrated from Luxembourg, but I’m not completely certain. Can you help me verify their roots?

LuxCitizenship’s professional research team can assist in confirming your family’s roots and determining whether you qualify for the citizenship recovery process. We perform specialized searches of Luxembourgish civil archives to locate the necessary vital records for your specific ancestor, providing the documented proof required for a successful application. What documents or evidence are required to prove my Luxembourgish ancestry?

Applicants typically need certified vital records to prove lineage. You do not need an apostille for any US or Canadian record. The exact list of requirements depends on your specific case, which we’ll walk you through once you sign up.

What if a document for an ancestor is missing, never existed, or has a name spelled differently?

This is not an uncommon situation, and it doesn’t automatically rule out eligibility. We evaluate these cases individually, and we will point you to acceptable secondary documentation to submit to support the lineage information.

The Process

Timeline & applying with family

How long does the process take from signup to finish?

Timelines vary by case and depend largely on how quickly the client submits full documentation to our team after signing up. On average, once we submit the application to Luxembourg, ministry processing takes about 90 days. In total, the citizenship process typically takes 6 to 8 months under the Article 7 pathway and 10 to 12 months under Article 23 or Articles 7/23.

My family member worked with LuxCitizenship in the past. Will that make my application easier or faster?

Yes, if you have family that previously applied, you only need to submit the vital records that are different from the ones they did. The document gathering part is one of the longest parts of the process, so the fewer records you need, the faster the process will move.

I have a family member who also wants to apply. May they join my application?

Yes, your family member may join your application as long as we have not yet submitted your application to Luxembourg for processing. In any case, they may also apply separately and would be able to reference your application so that they won’t need to resubmit the same records as you.

How many clients have you successfully supported in obtaining citizenship?

LuxCitizenship has helped nearly 3,100 individuals obtain Luxembourg citizenship since 2017.

Requirements

Language & spouses

Do dual citizenship applicants have to speak Luxembourgish?

No, individuals pursuing citizenship by descent do not need to speak Luxembourgish or take the Sproochentest (language test) or civics course.

Can my spouse automatically get dual citizenship, too?

Spouses do not automatically get citizenship in Luxembourg and cannot apply for citizenship based on your ancestor (by virtue of marriage), but they may obtain citizenship through naturalization. The process will look different for them and includes language and civics requirements.
