Firwat Lëtzebuerg?

What Luxembourg Means to Me

Let’s work together to make sure that every qualified applicant to reclaim Luxembourg citizenship has the chance to do so.

December 31, 2020 is the deadline for most people applying to recover Luxembourg Citizenship.

Because of Covid19, thousands of people now face a huge challenge – will they be able to travel to Luxembourg before December 31st?

You might think that the Government in Luxembourg will change the deadline. However, both the deadline and requirement to apply in person are written into Luxembourgish law. Therefore, any change will require a bill to be voted on in the legislative assembly to become law. This is far from an overnight process. Passing a new law normally takes 4 months minimum.

We do not want any qualified applicant to lose this opportunity to reclaim citizenship due to circumstances out of their control. To get the law changed, we the people have to take action.

Background to our Appeal

Learn more about how we plan to present ourselves to the Luxembourg government here.

How Can I Help?

We are asking all applicants reclaiming Luxembourg Citizenship & current dual citizens to record a 1-3 minute long video answering for you, “Why Luxembourg?”

More specifically:

  • Why you applied for Luxembourg citizenship?

  • Why you are proud to be a Luxembourger?

  • What the opportunity of citizenship AND/OR what Luxembourg means to you.

See further instructions below.

What We Will Do

We will create a compilation video of the different #FirwatLëtzebuerg videos.

The video will request the Deputies of Luxembourg’s Chamber of Deputies to modify the Nationality Law so that all qualified applicants have the opportunity to complete their recovery declaration. That message will be recorded in Luxembourgish language.

The compilation will feature moments from all the videos crafting a positive message. The idea of the video will be to show our passion for Luxembourg and how we can contribute to a more vibrant future as citizens.

The video will be distributed online via social media and through the press and media in Luxembourg.
