Luxembourg Citizenship Eligibility Is Changing on December 31, 2025. Take Action Now
Congratulations are in order, you’re now a citizen! As they say in Luxembourg, Félicitatiounen.
According to Luxembourgish law, you are a citizen 4 months after making your citizenship declaration at the Bierger-Center. Practically speaking, this is 126 days after your declaration. If it’s been 126 days, we can start talking next steps!
So, what comes next?
If you have an adult child waiting for you to obtain citizenship so that they too can travel to Luxembourg, please have them send us an email to info@luxcitizenship.com so we can provide them with next steps.
Six months after making your declaration in Luxembourg City, you will receive a letter from the Luxembourg City government. Once you receive this letter, you should upload it here.
You may receive directly in the mail a three page multilingual letter with one page that looks like the image. You might get this letter twice. This is the RNPP Extract. Read our article below to learn more.
Please note, this letter is in no way covered by your service contract with LuxCitizenship. If you have any questions on it, you must book a consultation.

No, this is not a mistake. Your children are not separate applicants, they are a derivative of your application. You receive no separate documentation for them. This is just how the Luxembourgish Government works. You should check the eventual National Registry Extract that you’ll receive to confirm that your children are included. If they are not included in the National Registry Extract, use the model letter below to write the National Registry and send a photocopy of their birth certificate and US passport. You do not need a separate document to apply for a passport for your children, you only need yours (the legal parent’s).
Now that you are a citizen of Luxembourg, you can apply for a passport or national ID card. Your citizenship is permanent and the Executed Citizenship Declaration informing you of your citizenship does not expire. You do not need the passport to be a citizen.
To apply for a Luxembourg passport in the USA, you will need to wait for your Executed Citizenship Declaration from the Government of Luxembourg City. To apply in Luxembourg or at an Embassy outside the USA, you may be able to apply without the letter from Luxembourg. You should contact the relevant authority for more information.
Where you are entitled to apply for a passport in the USA depends on your state of normal residence (determined by the address on your driver’s license).
To apply for a passport, you must appear in person. There are no exceptions.

Passport Office: Some people wish to apply directly in Luxembourg at the Passport Office in Luxembourg City. You can receive an expedited passport within 3 business days. As with the Consulates and Embassies, we always suggest you contact the Passport Office first to confirm pricing, the evidence you need to bring to the office and their hours. Luxembourg Embassy Abroad: If you have proof that you are living abroad in another country outside of the USA or Luxembourg, you can contact the closest Luxembourg Embassy to apply for your passport and ID. Please note that they each have their own rules about what evidence you need to bring to apply for a passport, so you must contact them directly.
Even if you apply for a passport abroad, if you are a US resident you should register and stay in touch with your Consular Office based on your state to find out when they go back to normal operations. You should follow the instructions on their individual website to get in touch.
Finally, if you do not have an imminent need to use your Luxembourg passport, you may consider waiting to apply until you need it. Luxembourg passports are only valid for 5 years. So long as you remain a resident of the United States, the Luxembourg government advises you to only travel on your United States passport. Many clients make a trip to another city to apply for the passport, only to have it expire before they are able to move to Europe and use it.
Along with your Executed Citizenship Declaration from the Government of Luxembourg City, you will receive a separate letter with your National Registry Extract. Please refer to this article to learn more about the extract and how to get it updated if there are any incorrect data points on the extract.
